About the rescuer and the rescue story
Leonardas Miniotas was a father of five and a farmer from the village of Varlaukis, in the Eržvilkas region of Lithuania. He was known in his community as a kind-hearted, honest, and compassionate man, always ready to help others. His family remembers him as gentle and humorous — even at the end of his life, when illness brought him pain, his humor remained intact.
In 1941, when the Jewish community of Skaudvilė was being annihilated, Leonardas and his wife Ona opened their home to two Jewish women who had escaped the violence — Černė Fridmanaitė and her mother Pesia. For some time, they also sheltered a Jewish boy, Nachum Levy, with the help of their children. Despite the danger of searches and denunciation in the region, Leonardas did everything he could to provide shelter and safety for those fleeing death.
He lived by a simple conviction: if you see a person in need — you must help.
In 1996, Leonardas Miniotas was honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations.
